Patrick Dixon has spent 18 years of his life as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach, having worked at top programs including the University of Connecticut, the University of California, St. John’s University, and Loyola Marymount. Now, he works with Momentous, attracted to the growing company’s deep-rooted commitment to research and developing products that bring high performance to a new level.
“It’s not good enough just to give an athlete a protein shake after they train and say, ‘Okay, here you go. On your way,’” Dixon Says. “We need to start thinking on a higher level and ask better questions. What does an athlete need in the 24 hours around a training session? How do we improve recovery? What are the gaps in nutrition that can be fixed? How do we do a better job of taking care of the athletes’ real needs?”
This unique philosophy is the reason why Momentous continues to commit to real research with some of the leading minds in the fields of nutrition and exercise physiology.
Momentous’ flagship product PR Lotion,™ is a great example of research leading to a one-of-a-kind performance enhancing solution. Sodium bicarbonate is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as having a significant benefit for athletic performance and is completely legal in pro and NCAA sport. It’s a simple electrolyte that improves buffering capacity in the body, which leads to higher intensity work for longer periods of time.
“It means you’re going to be able to get more out of every workout whether that be in the weight room or on the field,” Dixon says. “For gameday, you’ll have an advantage by operating at a higher intensity for a longer period of time with the potential for better recovery between plays.”
Although there are over 50 years of research supporting the use of sodium bicarbonate as an ergogenic aid, it’s often not even on a strength coaches’ radar.
“When taken orally, you get GI distress that can vary from burps and bloating to worse,” Dixon explains. “In developing PR Lotion, transdermal delivery completely bypasses the gut so the benefits can be experienced without the negative side effects.”
Collagen is another important product that Momentous offers and is doing more research on because of the potential to promote tendon and ligament strength and reduce injuries.
“Muscles and tendons are on the same string. Coaches do a really good job of making sure that their athletes have protein post workout to aid muscle recovery,” Dixon says. “But what about the tendons and ligaments stressed in that workout? The amino acid needs of collagen and other connective tissue are different from those of skeletal muscle. You have to consider that.”
Momentous designed their Collagen Shot RTD for athletes who want convenient access to the benefits of collagen on the go. Each shot contains 10 grams of collagen plus 35 milligrams of Vitamin C, which can improve both the amount and strength of collagen synthesis. We’re also exploring how different ingredients may improve outcomes specific to female athletes and the reduction of musculoskeletal injuries.
The focus at Momentous is optimizing athletic performance, recovery and long-term health and wellness. The product design process is done by pulling from the current research and collaborating with practitioners like strength coaches and dietitians. Couple that with meaningful research executed by some of the best labs in the country and it’s a powerful combination.
“We’ve got some really interesting projects in the pipeline that we’re chasing down.” Dixon says. “We’re going to do the research, we’re going to figure it out. The end goal is bringing products to market that really work.”
