Joey Guzzo, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at California State University-Stanislaus, firmly believes in the power of trust and personal relationships to enhance athletic performance. His approach isn’t just about physical training; it’s about building connections that foster growth and success.
Guzzo’s strategy focuses on creating an environment where athletes feel valued, understood, and equally important. This nurturing approach leads to a deeper level of commitment and willingness to push beyond perceived limits.
“I needed athletes to trust me. And if they don’t trust somebody, it’s going to be hard for them to do what you ask or run through a wall for you,” says Guzzo.
Cultivating Deep Connections
Guzzo recognizes the importance of understanding each athlete’s unique background. By learning about their lives outside of sports, he builds trust and demonstrates genuine care.
“Now, it doesn’t mean we spend the whole time talking, but within our training, I’m trying to spend time to learn about my student athletes, where they’re from, their stories, families, majors, anything I can find to just relate to them,” he says.
Guzzo’s role often extends beyond coaching. He becomes a supportive figure, especially for athletes far from home, providing emotional and motivational support.
“A supervisor, an old mentor of mine, Jim Peele, now retired at Butler University, would tell me, ‘Guzzo every day, love ’em up.’ Because a lot of times we are the de facto parents or guardians,” he says.

A cornerstone of Guzzo’s philosophy is treating every athlete with the same level of respect and attention, regardless of their status on the team.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a starter or you’re the 15th person on the bench, you get treated the same,” he says.
