Flooring is an essential part of any weight room. It’s something that athletes and coaches use every day, often without even noticing the role it plays in safety and performance. Although the importance of flooring can be underappreciated, the flooring a coach chooses for his weight room is crucial to the overall quality and effectiveness of his training program. One company that stands above the rest in delivering on the promise of elite flooring is Regupol.
Regupol offers reliable and effective flooring solutions manufactured from pre- and post-consumer tire rubber rescued from landfills. With more than 65 years of experience designing and refining their products, Regupol provides their customers with the knowledge and product necessary to bring flooring to life within a strength program.
Martin Streight is a strength coach who stands by the quality of Regupol’s flooring products. He has experience working as a strength coach at Penn State University and Princeton University. He’s also worked with the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, and NFL Europe.
“Regupol is a true flooring innovator,” Streight says. “From the time they came to the U.S.from Germany many, many years ago until today, Regupol has been an innovator. They literally created the concept of how to design and build their type of flooring, which is comprised of recycled tires and a polymer to bind it together.”
Regupol differentiates itself in the methods it uses to manufacture and install its flooring. It has a state-of-the-art factory, which allows them to do what other companies can’t. Most companies create floors consisting of an underlayment with a wear layer laminated on top. Floors are usually laminated inside the factory before installation. Conversely, Regupol’s products, such as its AktivPro Roll,™ are not factory laminated.
“That’s important because if the wear layer is factory laminated, roll length can only be 25 feet. So, you get a head seam every 25 feet,” Streight explains. “Whereas with Regupol, they can put the wear layer on and go wall-to-wall well over 100 feet in one shot.”
By avoiding the factory lamination, it gives Regupol the freedom to build the floor directly in the field for its customers. It also reduces the number of seams and how deep the seams run, so there are less points for potential failure in the product after it’s installed.
Regupol also allows for coaches to choose different thicknesses of flooring depending on how much cushion they want. Regupol’s standard floor, the AktivPro Roll, has the option to go from a thickness of 1 inch all the way up to 2.75 inches. This has a direct impact on athletic performance and safety.
“With the 1-inch system, we get 43 percent force reduction from the floor,” Streight says. When an athlete is catching a clean or performing polymetric exercises like bounding or skipping, the floor absorbs the force, reducing the impact on the athlete’s tendons, muscles, bones, joints, and ligaments.”
There are also safety concerns in the amount of friction any flooring provides. If the weight room becomes hot and humid, it can cause flooring to become dangerously slippery. Regupol flooring ensures that there is enough friction to lower the chances of this type of injury.
Regupol offers unique customization options so that coaches can personalize their weight room, too. The company uses EPDM rubber to produce almost any color imaginable— and because the color is blended throughout the product, there is no color loss over time.
“It really allows you to individualize based upon your need,” Streight says. “We have water jet-cut logos. We can put logos in the platforms. We can put logos in the floor. We can even do turf with logos. It’s very customizable.”
Regupol offers a 10-year, 100 percent manufacturer’s warranty, ensuring quality for a decade. Coaches should read the fine print on their current warranty if they’re not using Regupol. Many would be surprised to find that the fine print reveals their warranty is pro-rated over its lifetime, often delivering on only 30% of its value during its waning years.
Additionally, Regupol prides itself on proper installation, using only qualified flooring contractors to install their floors. A Regupol installation is an authentic installation, completed by people who know the product and know the process. Not just anyone is allowed to install a Regupol floor.
“The materials are the same from start to finish, but you need to have somebody with the expertise to come in and actually lay the platforms out, lay the floor out, lay the turf out, make sure everything’s flush, the transitions are great, the seams are bricked,” Streight says. “It’s a lot more than just rolling it, spreading some glue, and sticking it to the floor.”
Clearly, flooring is a key component of every weight room, so it’s important to work with a partner you can trust. Coaches can depend upon Regupol from evaluation to selection to installation. Regupol gets the job done the right way, which is something every coach values.
