Sam Melendrez, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Discovery Canyon (Colo.) High School, talks about the first thing athletes must do when they step into his weight room.
Coach Sam Melendrez began working in the field of strength & conditioning as an intern at the United States Olympic Training Center. He moved on to become an assistant at the United States Air Force Academy and then worked as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico.
He now works at Discovery Canyon Campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he is charge of the strength and conditioning program at Discovery Canyon High School. His program has received the “Strength of America Award” multiple times from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) for his excellence in the field of strength and conditioning. In 2021, he was awarded High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by the NSCA. He is also involved in the NSCA as a member of the NSCA’s High School executive council.
